Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting devices, accounts, and data from unauthorized access, damage, or theft. It sounds like a topic for IT departments and large companies, but almost every attack in this course targets individuals directly — a personal email account, a phone, a saved password, a moment of not paying attention.
A password reused across sites, a photo, a bank login, a saved card number — none of it feels valuable sitting on a personal device, but each is worth money to someone. Stolen email accounts get sold in bulk; stolen banking credentials get drained directly; even a working social media account has resale value for running scams under a trusted-looking name.
Most attacks are not one hacker deliberately choosing one target. Scripts and bots scan millions of email addresses, phone numbers, and websites continuously, testing leaked password lists and known vulnerabilities automatically. Being "not important enough to be a target" doesn't apply — the scan doesn't know or care who is being tested, it only cares what works.
One clicked link, one reused password, one unlocked phone left on a table — the gap between an ordinary day and a genuinely bad one (a locked-out account, drained savings, a ransomed laptop) is usually a single small decision, not a sophisticated attack. That is also the good news: small, consistent habits close almost all of it.
